How to develop a message filter in Thunderbird?

How many messages do you get every day? How many? More?

There’s a good chance you’re getting too many. There is probably not much spam reaching your inbox, but there is undoubtedly a lot of mail arriving there that doesn’t require your urgent attention. Perhaps you even receive intimate information at work that you want to put off until you get home.

So what are we to do? If it’s staring at you from your email, ignore it. Why not save some time and sort it by hand?

I can give you a clever trick if you use Thunderbird: set up message filters to have Thunderbird automatically sort messages into the folders of your choosing.

Move to “Tools” > “Message Filters” in Thunderbird.

The account you want to create a filter for can be found under the “Filters for:” option. Next, select the “New…” button on the right side to bring up the “Filter Rules” window for a fresh message filter.

You may specify as many restrictions as you’d like; for instance, all emails sent from your mom’s account that include your sister’s name in the message body and have your dad added as a CC recipient should go into the urgent family business folder. To add a new rule, click the + button next to the previous rule.

Additionally, you can combine a variety of the daily mail that you receive into one folder. For instance, create a rule that catches all mail from MakeUseOf (the Sender field should contain MakeUseOf.com), and then create a separate rule within the same filter for any other newsletter or email update you want to group into the same folder.

Of course, you can’t simply place your emails in folders. The menu shown above shows the various other tasks the message filters can carry out. Automatically “mark as read,” “tag a message,” or—this is the coolest—reply using a template, for instance. If necessary, you can instruct the message filter to execute numerous operations on a single email.

You can quickly organize the influx of emails that arrive in your inbox every day with a little bit of discipline, ensuring that you never again miss an essential communication that enters your inbox unfiltered.
