The best way to make folders on the Start Menu

It’s simple to create folders in the Start Menu. First, make sure Settings > Windows Update has updated your copy of Windows 11 to version 22H2.

  • You may access the Start menu by pressing the Windows key or by clicking the icon in the Taskbar.
  • To add the first app to a folder, click and hold it. Beginning to create start menu app folders
  • You can add a second app to the folder by dragging its icon there and dropping it on top.
  • Both apps will be placed within the automatically formed folder. To close the folder, click anywhere.

Only the Pinned Apps list, not the All Apps list, allows you to create app folders. Go to All Apps, right-click the programme you want to add to a folder, and select Pin to Start if it isn’t already pinned.

How to Change the Name of an App Folder

‘Folder’ will be the label for each folder you make using the aforementioned technique. Even though that isn’t very descriptive or helpful, you can happily change the folder name.

  • To access the folder in the Start Menu, click the folder.
  • Enter the folder name you want to use by clicking on the Edit Name field.
  • The folder can’t be moved about the Start Menu using drag and drop, just like you can move programmes.

Above all, there is folder editing. The ability to alter the color of folders would be wonderful, but it is not available. This choice might be provided in a subsequent Windows 11 release.

App Removal from Folders: How to Do It

Apps may be easily moved from folders to the list of pinned apps. Only when there are two or more programmes within do folders persist.

  • Click on the software you want to uninstall after opening the folder from the Start Menu.
  • Drag the app icon from the folder’s edge and drop it on the list of pinned apps.
  • The remaining app will likewise be transferred out of the folder if there is only one app in the folder after an app is removed.
  • When you delete an app from Windows 11, it will also be deleted from the folder and the Start Menu.

Where to Find Start Menu Layout Options

The 22H2 upgrade added various additional layout choices for the Start Menu in addition to the ability to create folders. The new layout options are accessible from Settings > Personalization > Start.

There are three layout options available: More Pins, Default layout, or More Recommendations. You can pin folders that you have created in the Start Menu just like you can pin individual apps. The app folders may therefore be buried if you select the More Recommendations layout.

The Start Menu style choices in Windows 11

By choosing Move to Front when you right-click a folder in the Start Menu, you can stop this from happening. This places certain apps or folders at the top of the list of pinned apps.

App Folders being added to the Start Menu

When Windows 11 originally debuted, users weren’t all that fond of the Start Menu. App folders are a step toward improving the usability of this important Windows feature. Your apps can now be quickly grouped to make them simpler to find.

Best way to remove a folder from the Start Menu

You might have observed that there is no “Delete” option there if you want to remove a folder you previously established from the Start menu. A folder’s contents can still be deleted to erase the folder itself. As follows:

Drag all the application icons back into the Start menu after opening the folder on the Start menu that you want to delete.

The folder will automatically disappear once all the icons have been taken out and placed back under “Pinned” programmes in the Start menu.

Final words

The Windows 11 operating system now has start menu folders. When Windows 10 first came out, as with the stable version of Windows 11 21H2 that was released last year, there were simply tiles (icons) of the pinned applications.

However, with the release of Windows 11 22H2, things are set to improve. You can quickly and easily access your favorite apps using the folders in the Start menu.
